Nova Scotia Power is seeking an experienced communications professional to join its Corporate Communications team as Communications Manager, focused on external audiences. Reporting to NSP’s Director of Corporate Communications, the Communications Manager is the company’s primary media contact and spokesperson. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and executing communications strategies as part of an integrated corporate communications team. This role requires flexibility for after hours work when required and responding to media inquiries. Occasional travel within Nova Scotia will be required.
The responsibilities of the Communications Manager are wide-ranging, including development of communications strategies and plans, issues management, media relations including; conducting interviews, preparing senior executives for media interviews, preparing media summaries and analysis; speech-writing, and reviewing and contributing to regulatory and stakeholder documents. The Communications Manager collaborates daily with key subject matter experts throughout the organization, and other team members focused on internal communications, customer communications, and social media as part of a high-performing team. The Communications Manager plays an integral role on the team every day, and particularly during storm response, when the Communications team provides 24/7 coverage.
Skills, Capabilities and Experience:
The successful candidate will have impeccable oral and written communications skills, with more than seven years’ experience in communications roles, including at least three years as the primary media spokesperson for an organization. Candidates must have experience in front of TV cameras and media scrums. The position requires someone who can multi-task, re-balance priorities on short notice, and perform with confidence and clarity during times of high pressure. As a manager, the role requires exceptional leadership and people management skills. The successful candidate will also have the interpersonal skills to collaborate with everyone from front-line workers and technical experts to members of the executive team. The ability to think strategically, problem solve and make decisions is paramount. Subject matter is often complex and requires advanced capabilities in distilling pertinent information that is relevant for all audiences. Proficient skills on various social media and digital platforms are essential. A degree in Public Relations or Journalism is preferred.
