The Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board (CNSOPB) is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is the independent joint agency of the Governments of Canada and Nova Scotia responsible for the regulation of petroleum activities in the Canada-Nova Scotia offshore area.


Position Summary:


Reporting to the Director, Communications, this position is responsible for supporting the implementation of the CNSOPB’s communications strategy. This may include support for:

 

  • Stakeholder engagement

  • Crisis communications and issues management

  • Media relations and social media

  • Aboriginal consultation

  • Internal communications

 

Working with the Director, Communications, the Advisor, Communications will help ensure the Board’s communications activities support overall efforts to build public confidence and raise the public’s awareness of the Board’s role as the regulator of the Canada-Nova Scotia offshore. This involves gathering and translating complex technical and procedural information into clear, relevant and accurate messaging that can be readily understood by the public and other stakeholders.


This position also supports the Director, Communications in managing internal and external aspects of the Board’s Emergency Response Communications Plan.

 

Primary responsibilities include:

 

  • Support the development and execution of CNSOPB’s communication strategy. 

  • Research and develop a range of high quality communication materials including communication plans, key messages, news releases, presentations, speeches, etc.

  • Assist the Director, Communications in the lead role of the crisis communications response team. Assist in necessary training for staff and updating the emergency response communications plan as needed.

  • Identify potential issues that may positively or negatively impact the CNSOPB’s reputation.

  • Maintain effective relationships with media, respond to / coordinate all media calls and requests for interviews. This includes managing media issues and providing strategic communications guidance to senior staff when needed.

  • Serve as CNSOPB spokesperson as required.

  • Support the development and execution of public and aboriginal consultation and engagement plans. 

  • Lead and coordinate CNSOPB’s online presence (website, intranet and social media) through the development of editorial content calendar, writing content, trouble shooting and engaging stakeholders on various online-platforms.

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including members of the media.

 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and technical competencies:

 

  • Bachelors Degree in public relations combined with relevant experience.

  • A minimum of 4-6 years experience working in a public relations role.

  • Demonstrated editorial, writing and copy-editing skills.

  • Demonstrated experience working under pressure, achieve results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and the ability to thrive under short deadlines.

  • Knowledge and understanding of internal and external communication best practises.

  • Ability to translate strategic direction into effective communication plans that are easily understood.

  • Project management experience and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Excellent technical writing skills, presentation skills, and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience with day-to-day media inquiries, providing accurate information in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work with confidential information or sensitive information independently.

  • Experience managing online platforms (website, twitter) for an organization including using analytical tools and software (i.e. Google Analytics).

  • Experience in public engagement and familiarity with IAP2 principles and tactics.

  • Team Player.

  • Creativity, high energy, determination and flexibility.

 

This position is being offered an 18-month contract with the possibility of renewal. Compensation will commensurate with experience and qualifications.
