Doctors Nova Scotia (DNS) is the professional association representing all physicians in the province. The association has more than 3,500 members, including practising physicians, retired physicians, medical students and residents.


The Opportunity: Senior Communications Officer

Reporting to the Director, Communications & Member Engagement, the Senior Communications Advisor assists with the day-to-day internal and external communications for Doctors Nova Scotia (DNS). The Senior Communications Advisor identifies key opportunities to increase awareness of the association’s role, mandate, and advocacy on behalf of the medical profession. This role works closely with other members of the Communications & Member Engagement team, as well as colleagues in Health Policy and Physician Wellness, as part of a cross-functional team to bring strategic communications plans to life. The Senior Communications Advisor is responsible for managing projects and issues and providing advice on and solutions for those issues, often working directly with physician members.

Job responsibilities include:

Communications and public relations

  • Developing and implementing cohesive and integrated multi-channel communications and marketing strategies and monitoring their success to support the overall goals and objectives of the organization.

  • Providing strategic advice on member relations and public relations activities to protect, promote and enhance a positive profile, reputation and brand for DNS and the province’s physicians.

  • Writing, developing and delivering quality and timely member and public communication materials, using a full spectrum of communication tools, to support the communications and member engagement strategies of DNS. This includes:

  • editorial content for DNS’s official magazine (print publication), internal e-newsletter and YourDoctors.ca (public-facing advocacy website);

  • web and social media content;

  • key messages, news releases, articles, correspondence and speaking notes; and o presentations for internal and external delivery.

  • Staying informed of developments in the field of marketing and communications within the medical profession and beyond to foster ideas and innovation.


Member engagement

  • Developing, executing and measuring member engagement strategies with a focus on deepening the relationship between the organization and its members and enhancing awareness of and maximizing participation in and satisfaction with DNS events, programs and benefits.

  • Leading the development of member engagement activities, such as educational webinars, communications and digital communities, and measuring their success.

  • Identifying and acting on opportunities to improve consistency in messaging and member experience across channels and activities.

  • Tracking engagement across various platforms to facilitate data-driven decisions.

Your skills and experience include:

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a senior public relations or external communications role.

  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of the philosophy, theories and principles of the communications discipline.

  • Considerable knowledge of the objectives, programs and best practices of strategic communications planning, media relations, issues management, events management and stakeholder relations.

  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills, with exceptional writing/editing skills.

  • Proven abilities in developing and implementing communications strategies.

  • Big picture thinker with strategic problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong project management skills with the ability to meet objectives in a timely manner.

  • The ability to identify and analyze key contentious and emerging issues and provide strategic advice and recommendations.

  • Strong media relations skills.

  • The ability to synthesize and articulate complex issues, problem solve and facilitate the implementation of effective solutions.

  • The ability to handle confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate manner and display a high degree of judgement, discretion, and decision-making ability.

  • The ability to work well independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Proficient in the use of MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook) and various CMS platforms.

  • A positive and productive team player who embraces the talents of their colleagues and openly shares their expertise with others for the sake of shared success.

  • Being flexible for evening and weekend work as needed is a requirement for this position.

Our requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs or a related discipline, or a combination of equivalent training, education and experience.

  • Doctors Nova Scotia requires that all employees provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19, by confirming the vaccine(s) received and the dates of each dose.
